Creating An Easy, Effective At Home Dental Routine

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene With An At Home Dental Routine

Having a good routine in place can come with a range of benefits, such as improved mental health, a better sleep pattern and increased overall productivity. We believe that your dental routine should be no different. It can be hard to find time to establish a regular dental routine when you have other priorities, but having one in place can come with oral health benefits you may not have previously been aware of.

Our team of specialists are passionate about preventative dentistry, and having a good, at home dental routine can help prevent oral health issues from forming. We’ve put together some top tips on creating the perfect dental routine, all of which you can do from your own home.

Never Go To Bed Without Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth twice a day might sound like the easiest thing in the world, but according to a recent you.gov survey, ‘one in fifty Brits (or 2%) say they don’t brush their teeth at all on a typical day.’ It is incredibly important to brush your teeth twice a day.

You should never go to bed without brushing your teeth as this can lead to an unhealthy build up of plaque. Plaque forms throughout the day, even if you eat ‘clean’ foods. If this plaque is not removed, it can lead to issues like early gum disease (gingivitis), which could easily have been prevented by simply brushing your teeth twice a day.

Make sure to brush with a fluoride toothpaste as fluoride is an incredibly strong defence against tooth decay. It provides a protective barrier. Ensure you are brushing all surfaces of your mouth, from top to bottom.

Don’t forget to brush your tongue, either. Adding brushing your tongue to your dental routine is the perfect preventative measure to fighting against oral health issues. Bacteria can form on your tongue, it isn’t just limited to your teeth. Sticking to brushing your teeth regularly won’t be as effective if you forget to brush your tongue.

Flossing, Mouthwash & Everything Inbetween

Flossing is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene. When flossing for the first time, it can feel nerve wracking. You might not know where to start. Flossing can help to prevent gum disease and it is easy to perform from your own home. It shouldn’t be time consuming either, so it’s the perfect trick to add to your at home dental routine.

Mouthwash can help to fight plaque and kill any bacteria that has formed throughout the day. It’s quick and easy to use, and therefore a good addition to your at home dental routine. Using mouthwash for 30 seconds, twice a day, is all it takes to be effective at maintaining

Sugar-free gum helps to replenish tooth enamel and is a good source of calcium for your teeth. It not only freshens your breath, but is simple and easy to use on the go.

Looking after your health in other ways by avoiding sugary drinks, smoking and wearing a mouthguard whilst playing sports. If you take care of your health in these other areas, it will benefit your oral health, too.

Still Visit Your Dental Practice

Just because you have mastered a good at home dental routine, doesn’t mean you can neglect your dental practice. Regular, routine checkups at your dental practice are important for maintaining excellent oral hygiene. Your dentist will be able to tell you which areas of your oral health you need to target specifically and offer their expert advice and guidance.
